How come many 4X4s were needed to extract it, when clearly it was driven there itself?
Did the land change THAT much over the years?
I’m not smart, someone help me figure this out.

My buddy used to say “2WD to get me in, 4WD to get me out”

I’m not smart enough to understand why they wanted to save it anyway.

Deserts are prone to massive landscape changes. Add to that the fact the roads going to this area were abandoned and it’s pretty easy for it to become inaccessible within a manner of a decade.

from what i recall from reading the article, the other 4x4s kept getting flat tires......

At the end of the FP article he says it’s the only real attachment he has to his biological father.

They need a V8-powered 4WD Volkswagen Beetle to take them there.

plot twist: biological father hated the car so much that he drove it until it wouldnt drive anymore as far away from anything as he could. was a attempt to destroy it....

I think the answer is to be found in the same way as that for the sofa-moving problem . That is to say, maths that are beyond me.

nah, they just needed some guys with a few spare tires, and better attention to what they were driving over......... the wagon DROVE there........

Ooh, this is a Good Answer.
I guess I only thought of deserts with huge dunes getting shaped by winds as the ones that change, not really the kind this one seems to be stuck in.

because its way easier to get in than to get out....

lack of vegetation means erosion happens pretty quickly, if roads aren’t graded regularly they become pretty gnarly trails.

I wouldn’t be surprised if erosion worked away at the ground beneath the car. Vegas and the neighboring landscape suffers a lot from flash flooding (Vegas because some of the rain water management didn’t take into account how far the city would develop upstream of watersheds). Given the Datsun is on a hill, the rainwater probably ate away for two decades until the car was found the way it was. I used to live in Vegas and there were always stories of parts of the city or outskirts flooding on the rare chance of rain.

His dad sounds like a dick if all he left him was a picked over shell of a car out in the desert some fucking where.

It’s ok. Reading is hard. Eventually you’ll gain the ability to comprehend the words in an article instead of having people spoon feed it to you.

It’s a video, hotshot and I didn’t watch it. I don’t care. People being sentimental about trash isn’t my thing. It’s clear, however, that it’s yours.
